What's Nearby
The area that is now Oak Ridge was inhabited by native people as early as 3,000 years ago. The first non-native explorers came in the 18th century, and the early 19th century saw the development of rural communities in the area. Oak Ridge was chosen as a Manhattan Project site in 1942, and workers there helped develop the U.S. nuclear program. The population dropped after the end of World War II, but Oak Ridge has remained a bustling community.
Today, Oak Ridge is home to about 30,000 people. Much of the local economy relies on the federal government; the U.S. Department of Energy owns multiple sites in Oak Ridge, and several other federal agencies operate offices in the area. Areas of interest include the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, and the American Museum of Science and Energy.
